Summit XPS Ceiling Board Installation Overview
Summit XPS ceiling boards are designed for quick, clean, and efficient installation across multiple ceiling systems. Their lightweight rigid design simplifies handling, while their closed-cell structure ensures long-term insulation performance. Installation can be performed using either direct nail-up, over-purlin, or over-truss methods, depending on the ceiling structure.
✅ Nail-Up Ceiling Installation (Residential & Commercial Interiors)
- Fit timber or steel battens at maximum 700mm centres across ceiling structure.
- Secure perimeter battens around the room for stability.
- Trim boards to span wall-to-wall without butt joints wherever possible.
- Apply Summit XPS adhesive along battens at 200mm intervals.
- Use concealed clips and drywall screws at board edges (concealed by cornices).
- Light sanding and filler may be applied prior to painting for a flawless finish.
- Always apply two coats of quality water-based matt PVA paint for UV protection.
✅ Over-Purlin Installation (Industrial & Commercial Roofs)
- Boards laid horizontally from apex to eave, beginning and ending on purlins.
- Butt joints centered on purlins with 5mm expansion gaps.
- Roof sheeting secured directly through XPS boards into purlins using extended roofing screws.
- MDF spacers recommended to avoid potential squeaking under pre-painted roof sheets.
- Roofing ridge vents recommended for thicker boards to prevent heat buildup.
✅ Over-Truss or Over-Rafter Installation (Pitched Roof Applications)
- Boards laid horizontally across trusses or rafters, with joints centered on top chords.
- Counter battens installed above boards to secure panels and resist uplift.
- Screws inserted through counter battens and XPS into rafters at 300mm intervals.
- Structural bracing may be required for top chord stability per engineering specifications.
- Finish with standard battens and roofing materials above.
✅ Important Installation Notes
- Use only water-based adhesives, cleaners, and paints.
- Avoid contact with solvent-based products which may damage the boards.
- Heavy lighting fixtures must be independently supported from structural timbers.
- LED lighting is preferred due to low heat emission near ceiling boards.
- Boards may be wiped with dishwashing liquid prior to installation to remove static charges.
Professional installation ensures optimal long-term performance of Summit XPS ceiling insulation boards. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and consult qualified installers where necessary for complex applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Summit XPS any good?
Yes — Summit XPS (extruded polystyrene) is highly effective. Its dense, closed-cell structure provides excellent thermal insulation by reducing heat transfer, helping to maintain stable indoor temperatures throughout the year. XPS improves energy efficiency, lowers heating and cooling costs, and delivers long-term performance with excellent moisture resistance, making it a reliable choice for both residential and commercial applications.
What is XPS board used for?
XPS (extruded polystyrene) boards are highly versatile products used across residential, commercial, and industrial projects. They’re ideal for ceiling insulation, wall cladding, underfloor insulation, cool rooms, refrigeration spaces, and under concrete slabs. Thanks to their excellent thermal properties, moisture resistance, and high compressive strength, XPS boards provide long-lasting insulation performance in both standard and high-humidity environments.
Which is better, EPS or XPS?
Both have advantages, but XPS outperforms EPS in most insulation applications. XPS offers higher R-values per thickness, greater compressive strength, and superior moisture resistance, making it more durable and effective in areas prone to water exposure or physical impact. While EPS is lightweight and cost-effective, XPS is typically the better choice for long-term performance, especially in roofing, underfloors, and wall insulation where durability and moisture protection are critical.
Can XPS insulation get wet?
Yes — XPS insulation is highly moisture resistant due to its closed-cell structure. It can tolerate exposure to damp environments without significant loss of insulating performance. Unlike some other insulation types, XPS resists water absorption, preventing mold growth and maintaining its thermal efficiency even in wet or humid conditions.
What is the lifespan of XPS?
XPS insulation is extremely durable and long-lasting. With its excellent moisture resistance and structural stability, XPS can maintain its insulating properties for 50 years or more under ideal conditions. Its closed-cell structure prevents deterioration from moisture, ensuring consistent thermal performance over decades of use.
