How Roof Insulation Works

Roof insulation helps reduce heat transfer through the roofing system. Materials fitted beneath the roof covering can limit summer heat gain and, depending on the system, reduce winter heat loss. The choice depends on the roof construction, the building’s use and the thermal performance required.

Factorylite provides a faced glasswool blanket, while Scrim Facing, Sisalation and Alububble offer reflective roofing options. These materials work differently: glasswool resists heat flow through its thickness, while radiant barriers reduce radiant heat transfer across an adjacent air space.

Insulating a New or Existing Roof

New construction and roof replacement provide an opportunity to position insulation beneath the roof covering. For an existing building, assess access, the roofing structure and any material already installed before choosing a product or planning the work.

Faced Glasswool Insulation

Factorylite is a flexible glasswool blanket with a facing finish for roofing applications. Our range includes 50mm, 75mm, 100mm and 135mm options for commercial, industrial and metal roofing projects.

Radiant Barrier Materials

Scrim Facing, Sisalation and Alububble provide reflective options beneath the roof covering. Compare reinforced foil and bubble foil products, including available grades and facing finishes.

A reflective system R-value depends on its tested roof construction and air spaces. Compare those conditions before treating it as equivalent to a blanket’s product R-value.

Which Thickness or Grade?

For glasswool blankets, compare the declared R-value and available thicknesses. The roofing system must accommodate the selected blanket according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

For foil and bubble foil, compare the product grade, fire classification, facing finish and specified air spaces. Thickness alone does not provide a useful comparison between these different material types.

Planning Your Material Order

Use the actual roof area, allowing for pitch, specified overlaps and cutting waste. Effective coverage can be lower than the total area of material supplied on each roll.

  1. Measure the actual roof area

    Measure the roof surfaces to be covered, allowing for the roof pitch. A building’s floor area can be smaller than its sloping roof area.

  2. Select your product and finish

    Compare Scrim Facing, Sisalation and Alububble grades and finishes, or choose the required Factorylite thickness for your roofing system.

  3. Check coverage and delivery

    The calculator fills roll coverage automatically. Allow for cutting and any overlaps excluded from that figure, then send us your quantity, delivery address and preferred delivery date.
