Factorylite Fire Resistance

Factorylite insulation is naturally non-combustible, manufactured from spun glass fibers with a very high melting point. Unlike other insulation products that rely on chemical treatments for fire resistance, Factorylite’s composition makes it inherently safe and non-toxic in high-temperature environments. Its fire-retardant performance lasts for the life of the insulation, with no degradation over time.

This makes it ideal for industrial and commercial roofs, where fire safety and thermal control are essential. Fiberglass products like Factorylite are often used in high-heat environments including furnaces, boilers, and ducting systems, thanks to their unmatched temperature resistance.

Fire Testing and Safety Ratings

  • Non-combustible – Tested to SANS 10177 Part 5
  • Class 1 Fire Index Rating – Tested to SANS 10177 Part 3
  • Class A1, s1, d0 – Tested to EN 13823
  • EUROCLASS A1 – Certified to EN 13501-1
  • ASTM E-84 (USA) – Flame Spread Index: 20, Smoke Development Index: 5
  • ASTM E-84 (WMF) – Flame Spread Index: 20, Smoke Development Index: 15

Factorylite stands out as one of the safest and most fire-resistant insulation solutions available in South Africa. Its combination of thermal performance and compliance with top international standards makes it the smart choice for fire-conscious construction projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Factorylite made of?

Factorylite is made from non-combustible glasswool (fibreglass) bonded together with a thermosetting resin and laminated with reflective foil. It’s designed for thermal and acoustic insulation in commercial and industrial roofs.

Is Factorylite fire-resistant?

Yes. Factorylite is naturally non-combustible and tested to some of the highest fire standards including SANS 10177 Part 5, EN 13501-1 (Euroclass A1), and ASTM E-84. It does not burn, melt, or release toxic fumes.

What is the R-value of Factorylite?

Factorylite is available in various thicknesses, each offering different thermal performance. For example:

  • 135mm: R-value 3.46
  • 100mm: R-value 2.56
  • 75mm: R-value 1.92
  • 50mm: R-value 1.28

The higher the R-value, the better the thermal resistance.

Can Factorylite reduce heat in summer?

Yes. Factorylite significantly reduces heat gain in summer, especially when installed under metal roofing. The reflective foil helps bounce radiant heat away, keeping interiors cooler.

Where is Factorylite typically installed?

It’s used in factories, warehouses, shopping centres, and large commercial buildings. It’s commonly installed between the purlins and roof sheeting in metal roof structures.

Is Factorylite SABS approved?

Yes. Factorylite complies with SABS and SANS standards for insulation performance, safety, and fire resistance.

Does Factorylite help with noise reduction?

Yes. While its primary function is thermal insulation, Factorylite also offers excellent acoustic absorption, reducing echo and outside noise in large spaces.

Can I install Factorylite myself?

Factorylite is best installed by professionals, especially in commercial roofs. The foil layer must face downwards and be properly lapped and sealed to ensure moisture control and maximum thermal benefit.

How does Factorylite compare to Aerolite?

While both are made from glasswool, Factorylite is foil-laminated and primarily used in metal roofing and industrial applications, whereas Aerolite is soft-touch and used mainly for residential ceiling insulation.
