Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Knauf insulation last?
Knauf insulation is engineered to last the entire lifetime of your building when installed correctly. It doesn’t degrade, compress, or lose performance over time, meaning it continues to deliver energy savings, acoustic comfort, and fire safety for decades — with no maintenance required. This long-term durability makes it a smart, once-off investment for homes and commercial buildings alike.
Is Knauf insulation good for soundproofing?
Knauf insulation offers excellent sound absorption and significantly reduces noise transfer between rooms, floors, and external sources. Its dense mineral wool structure traps airborne sound, helping to create quieter, more peaceful indoor environments. This makes it ideal for homes, offices, schools, and multi-unit buildings where acoustic comfort is essential.
Is Knauf insulation safe?
Yes, Knauf insulation is safe to use in homes, schools, and workplaces. It is manufactured using bio-soluble glass mineral wool and ECOSE® Technology, with no added formaldehyde or harsh chemicals. Their products comply with European health and safety standards and are not classified as carcinogenic. They are safe to handle with basic protective gear and pose no long-term health risks when installed correctly.
Is Knauf insulation mold resistant?
Yes, Knauf insulation is mold-resistant by design. Its glass mineral wool structure does not support mold growth, and it helps prevent moisture buildup inside walls, ceilings, and roof cavities. By maintaining a dry, stable environment, Knauf insulation protects your indoor air quality and helps reduce the risk of mold-related issues over time. This makes it a safe and reliable choice for both residential and commercial buildings.
What makes Knauf different from Aerolite or Isotherm?
Knauf Earthwool insulation stands out for its comfort, performance, and safety. Manufactured with ECOSE® Technology, it’s formaldehyde-free, soft to the touch, low in VOCs, and environmentally friendly — ideal for healthier homes and buildings.
Compared to Aerolite – Both are glasswool products with excellent thermal and acoustic performance, but Knauf has the edge with a higher density of 12kg/m³ (vs. Aerolite’s 11.5kg/m³), making it slightly more effective. Knauf is also softer to handle and free from harsh chemical binders, offering a more comfortable and eco-conscious installation experience.
Compared to Isotherm – Knauf clearly outperforms Isotherm in key areas:
- Higher R-values per thickness
- Greater density for improved insulation
- Superior soundproofing due to the glass mineral wool structure
- Better fire safety with a Euroclass A1 non-combustible rating
- More cost-effective, offering better performance at a lower price
- SABS approval – Isotherm does not carry SABS certification
For homeowners and contractors seeking top-tier insulation that meets SABS standards, enhances comfort, and delivers lasting energy savings — Knauf is the smarter choice.
Can Knauf insulation be used in both ceilings and walls?
Yes, Knauf insulation is designed for use in both ceilings and walls. Its versatile glass mineral wool composition makes it ideal for:
- Ceiling insulation – Helps regulate indoor temperatures year-round and lowers heating and cooling costs
- Internal walls – Improves soundproofing between rooms for greater privacy and comfort
- External walls – Enhances thermal performance, reducing heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter
Knauf Earthwool is available in a range of thicknesses and densities to suit various applications and meets SABS and SANS standards for thermal efficiency and fire safety.
